Blended Delivery

Study via face to face intensives; supported by Learner Guide, Assessment Guide; Online Seminars.

Classroom Delivery

Study in a face to face classroom environment; supported by our Facilitator, Learner Guide, Assessment Guide; Practical Activities and Class Discussion. Partial completion of Assessment Guides can be achieved in class time with the balance of Assessments completed in your own time

Time Commitment 

Nominal minimum hours of study plus individual research and on the job application is 1,200 - 2,400 hours (normally over a period of 12-24 months); OR approximately 10 hours research and study per week (face-to-face/online) for 12 months from commencement.  During the balance of the time, learners will be engaged in work-based/simulated work-based (portfolio building) activities and assessments.

Career Opportunities/Vocational Outcomes

This qualification is suitable for people who coordinate and maintain the Work Health and Safety (WHS) program in an organisation, such as Senior WHS Officer, WHS Manager or WHS Practitioner.

Course Structure

The Diploma of Work Health and Safety requires the completion of ten (10) units, consisting of five (5) core units and five (5) electives.

5 Core Units:

BSBWHS513 Lead WHS risk management
BSBWHS515 Lead initial response to and investigate WHS incidents
BSBWHS516 Contribute to developing, implementing and maintaining an organisation’s WHS management system
BSBWHS519 Lead the development and use of WHS risk management tools
BSBWHS522 Manage WHS consultation and participation processes

Elective Choices:

  • at least 3 units must be Group A in the Packaging Rules
  • the remaining 2 units may be from Group A or Group B in the Packaging Rules or any currently endorsed Training Package or accredited course at Certificate IV, Diploma or Advanced Diploma level.

Elective units must be relevant to the work environment and the qualification, maintain the integrity of the AQF alignment and contribute to a valid, industry-supported vocational outcome.

BSBWHS518 Manage WHS hazards associated with maintenance and use of plant
BSBWHS520 Manage implementation of emergency procedures

Entry Requirements/Pathways

All core units in the Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety (BSB41419) or equivalent competencies.

Equivalent competencies are predecessors to the following units which have been mapped as equivalent:
BSBWHS412 Assist with workplace compliance with WHS laws
BSBWHS413 Contribute to implementation and maintainenance of WHS consultation and participation processes
BSBWHS414 Contribute to WHS risk management
BSBWHS415 Contribute to implementing WHS management systems
BSBWHS416 Contribute to workplace incident response

Articulation Pathways from the Qualification
On completion of this course, you could consider higher qualifications in this Training Package, the Training Package area of your vocational competence, i.e. Advanced Diploma of Work Health & Safety (BSB60619) or in the higher education sector.  For instance, you may specialise in the Graduate Certificate in Management (Learning) (BSB80515), or Graduate Diploma of Management (Learning) (BSB80615) or Graduate Diploma of Strategic Leadership (BSB80215).

Gaining University Entrance
A Certificate IV or Diploma may gain 6-12 months advanced standing in a university degree.  Some Advanced Diplomas may be eligible for even more credit.  Choosing a GEM College of International Business to University Pathway is a great way to get practical 'job ready' skills and then gain entry to a university at an advanced stage.

A Graduate Certificate from GEM College of International Business, coupled with relevant industry experience, may gain entrance to postgraduate qualifications.
